Scarlett Wine Bar: Feverish about rooftop sunsets

The Internet is awash with blogs dedicated to SEO-whoring titles like “best rooftop bars in Bangkok”. This is not one of them. But we still feel fairly confident in saying Scarlett Bar has the best-value sundowners in town.

From 6pm to 8pm, beers, a selection of cocktails and wine are available at a flavour-enhancing, low happy hour prices. Wine by the glass costs only 100 baht++ – which is actually pretty decent given the wine import tax in Thailand is up around 300%. This feels like Bangkok before the price explosion of recent times (somehow a Flat White now costs double of that in Sydney – even though Bangkok baristas probably earn about 5% of their Australian counterparts).

An additional nice Scarlett touch is that the staff do the rounds at five minutes to eight to check if you’d like to stock your table with cheap drinks. Take advantage of this, they’ll keep your supplies refrigerated.

Foodwise, Isabella gets overly excited about the French fries… which I agree really are the best in Bangkok. Thin, crunchy and perfectly salted, the sprinkle of rosemary adds that touch of French fancy. They are dangerously moreish which, unfortunately, cannot be said about the rest of the food menu.

The cold cuts and cheese plates are fine (hard to mess that up, really) but at 1,720 baht++ for what could only be considered a snack (5 cheeses, 5 cold cuts and 1 pate), you undo all the financial benefits of necking cheap drinks for two hours. We have ordered the baby chicken a few times but it has been dry. The salads, meanwhile, are too small.

If you are hungry and want to order a main dish, choose the juicy lamb shank (760 baht++). Slow cooked in natural jus with seasonal vegetables, this sizeable meal will keep you eating way beyond your companions.

We recommend Scarlett as the perfect place to catch the sunset (which can be phenomenal when the pollution and cloud levels form the right hazy blend), load up on cheap drinks and some fries then hit one of the other places in Sathorn for a proper Thai dinner then out into the Bangkok night.

One important note – don’t wear flip flops or you won’t get in. They are unrelenting on that one.
